▸ Can I adapt your story/universe?
I'd rather you didn't, sorry! Especially if it's for commercial purposes.▸ Are there plans to adapt your verse into media?
Not at the moment!▸ Can I make fanart of your characters?
Of course! (Please show me so I can share it!)▸ Can I make an OC for your verse?
Sure! As long as you specify it's not canon, then by all means! (Please show me if you do, I'd love to see!!)▸ If the setting is fictional, why are there pictures of real places?
The pictures are for envisioning the general feeling of the places, it is not meant to be referencing anything specific. I'd like to eventually draw proper concept art for these places, but of course it takes time and honing my background drawing skills "orz

the ancients.
THE PRIMORDIAL THREE
Gaeian cosmology states that there are three major primordial beings from whence Gaeians came. These are referred to as "the Ancients", and embody what historians describe as the core tenets of human nature.
GRIEF, HUNGER AND DESIRE
Grief is embodied by the Primal Doloris, a weeping beast whose howls can be heard on quiet nights. It is believed that floods are caused by their tears and that their heartbeats are so intense, they can shatter mountains, causing the magma inside to overflow as does their pain.Hunger is embodied by the Primal Fames, a creature overcome with a ravenous appetite. According to Gaeian mythology, famines are caused by Fames devouring everything in its wake, even the earth from which the crops sprout. They feast upon anything, be it flesh or bone, including the deceased.Desire is embodied by the Primal Imerus, a being who stops at nothing to achieve pleasure - not necessarily just sensual, but any kind of self-gratification. Their enabling of the pursuit of hedonism is boundless, even when it borders on greed.
It's thought that humans' hubris is a product of Imerus's influence.
❝ from the tears of doloris came our blood,
from the body of fames came our flesh,
from the touch of imerus came our mind ❞
The relationship of Gaeians with the primordial three is more of reverence and fear than worship, it has been since the dawn of mankind. The Church of the Ancients was founded for this very reason ー it is not just a temple, it is a means to appease the beings that are responsible for their existence and to not invoke their wrath.
the council.
From the Primals came the minor Goddesses, referred to as patrons, who formed what is called "The Council"; an assembly to communicate effectively and better manage the continent. Each Patron has a different approach to politics and have varying levels of involvement in the lives of their respective population.Every one of the peoples' relationship with their respective patrons is unique and different, but overall they occupy a political and spiritual role (contrary to assumption that it'd be the Ancients who'd be revered.)

the church.
The Church of the Ancients was created to maintain order between the cosmos-dwelling beasts referred to as "Primals" (or Primordial Ones, Ancients, etc) and the people of Gaeia. From the dawn of civilization, disasters and misfortune have been attributed to the chaotic nature of the Ancients, so for many centuries now, the Church has taken it upon themselves to act as a bridge and ensure peace. Despite it being labeled "Church", it's not a conventional temple of worship, as the Church is comprised of just the Head of the Church, the three Seers and the faithful.The High Priestess is Lady Cthasis, one of the patrons, descended from the Primals. Every 100 years or so, three Seers are chosen, one per each Primal, and they act as the physical vessel for communication, and then there's the "faithful", who are students and scholars who volunteer and become "followers".To become a Seer, one must be chosen by the Primal upon birth, based on affinity. They must then undergo rigorous training, which culminates in the ceremony known as "ascension", where the vessel receives blood from the aforementioned Primal. This causes them to develop secondary characteristics and side effects that reflect the essence of the Primal, but these new features allow them to communicate with the foreign beings.
primal | attribute | current seer |
---|---|---|
doloris | grief | cordelia dupont |
fames | hunger | leonore iphigenis |
imerus | desire | anath/baal |
The activities of the Church are ritualistic in nature, and are often considered outlandish by other Gaeians:- The Vigil of Umbra, dedicated to Doloris, is a funerary rite, where the faithful bury their elders, who are also considered sacrifices, and mourn them at the same time.
- The Great Banquet, dedicated to Fames, where faithful are sacrificed and feasted upon (with the Seer of Fames being the one to take the first bite) until nothing, bones included, is left.
- The Mainomadia, dedicated to Imerus, is a celebration of debauchery and complete self-indulgence, often featuring excessive drinking or other intoxicating substances, frenzied orgies and autocannibalism during the night, and then perform a sacrifice as the sun rises.

▸ capital: praxidice
▸ patron: euthemis, the adjudicator
▸ government: machina delegatio
▸ motto: divino imperio (by divine command)
▸ notable landmarks: the palace of praxidice, hyperion
Nicknamed "The Everfair" due to the snow-covered marble buildings that tower over the people, Adraste is the dominion of The Adjudicator, Lady Euthemis.The country is known for its meticulous rules and severe punishments to those who break them. Government duties are taken care of by a group of officials called the Machina Delegatio, who publicly debate in the Platea Iuris, the central plaza of the Palace of Praxidice. Every last decision goes through Lady Euthemis herself before being approved or vetoed.Due to its high altitude, it's cold all year round and harvests are scarce, so they get food and other seasonal goods from the neighbouring nations. Because of their harsh climate, their main industry is focused on mineral extraction, which they then export to Tyrneven as material for forging.The national festival dedicated to their patron is Eurinomia, where people carve statues out of ice to symbolize the sturdiness of Adraste as a nation. It's also common for families to go to the mountain ranges to ride on sleighs and end the day at local taverns for a hot meal.

The Institute also hosts the Great Library, which holds records dating back centuries.It is tradition for the people to turn to their patron, Lady Videntia, for counsel before embarking on journeys or making big decisions. The inhabitants enjoy tropical climate, perfect for harvesting fruits which are regarded as delicacies all over the continent.Most islanders make a living from exporting fruits, crafting artisanal goods or other artistic ventures, like music or painting. And since Eromanis is the patron of pleasure and love, but also a patron of the arts and sciences, it's customary to ask for her blessing when performing music or creating artworks.The isles are a popular honeymoon spot, as it's said drinking from the springs of Arcadium grants a blessing from Eromanis, and the water acts as an aphrodisiac, believed to favour couples trying to conceive. In the middle of the continent is a rocky range surrounding Orphneus, dominion of The Forlorn, Lady Cthasis.Orphneus is not necessarily a nation, as there are no people beyond the Church and Lady Cthasis. It's underground, similarly to the villages in Tyrneven, but much deeper. It's because of this that it's colloquially referred to as "The Underworld."The sole purpose of Orphneus is to be the core of interactions between the Ancients and the people of Gaeia. This almost-liminal space exists in proximity to the chasm of Erebos, the domain of Lady Cthasis and the prime "window" to the cosmos. The Church is built around it, and the basement where the pool of matter is can't be accessed by anyone without permission.Lady Cthasis is the head of the Church, and it operates more like a parliament than a regular temple of faith for the Ancients. She's shackled to the Umbral Throne, a seat in the Church reserved for the high priest(ess) or superior.There are no national holidays.

{ BACKSTORY . }
Born in the town of Faun's Respite in Rumina to a line of devout clergy members of the Church of the Ancients, Noire was chosen to become the next Seer.Since she was chosen by Fames, the Primal of Hunger, upon receiving their blood she was granted the ability to communicate with the Ancients. However, she began to gradually develop painful mutations (as is customary to the ones who receive blood from the Ancients) in the forms of maws on her face and neck. She also developed a ravenous hunger that can never be fully sated. The maws speak in unintelligible ancient tongues that only those with ancient blood can decipher, and require feeding along with the host.Noire used to be married to a man, with whom she had a daughter named Camilla. They lived a relatively normal life, until Noire began undergoing the last stages of her training before becoming a Seer. It was at this time that her husband became abusive, especially after Camilla was born. The development of her ravenous hunger, the discomfort and frustration it brought, and the growing concern for Camilla's wellbeing drove a further wedge between them.One morning, in the early hours while the sky was still dark, Noire woke up to a bloodied bedsheet and the mangled corpse of her husband next to her, blood and remnants of flesh still stuck in her teeth. To this day, she does not recall what happened, it was as if the influence of Fames had taken over in a blur.She wonders if, perhaps, Fames was looking over her.
{ APPEARANCE & PERSONALITY. }

She always wears pearl earrings and her priestess attire.She's a tad stern but caring, serving as a mentor to the other followers of the Primals, and tries to lead a normal life despite the chaos.

Once a human scholar from Eurybdis, she perished at the age of 23 while on a voyage. Under her eye is a teardrop mark, product of the ritual to become a vessel. Her mouth is stitched shut, so she communicates with signs and grunts.Her body is thin and frail, her step slow and heavy. Her body parts, particularly her head and hands, fall off frequently but she's able to reattach them. ▸ title(s): the woodlands witch
▸ birthplace: virides, rumina
▸ affiliation(s): church of the ancients (formerly), the ancients
▸ likes: freedom, abandoned places, foraging in the forests
▸ dislikes: crowded places, rules
{ BACKSTORY . }
Originally from a Ruminian village, Ceres was born to a normal family, the eldest of two daughters.Even as a child, she'd been labelled as strange by the townspeople. She'd frequently run off into the woods and spend hours playing by herself using things like animal carcasses, branches and mud.
Her sister was a lot more obedient and well behaved, so she was the model child between the two, which led to immense amounts of pressure, whilst Ceres got to do whatever she wanted (to her parents' dismay).As she grew up, Ceres's behaviour became increasingly bizarre and off-putting, as well as risky. Her parents, fed up, sent her off to the Church of the Ancients to become a priestess, where she met Noire and became good friends with her.Ceres wasn't chosen to be a Seer, but her curiosity and disdain for rules brought her to the underground passages of the temple one night. She sealed a pact by ingesting the blood of all three Ancients, without permission nor supervision of any kind. In exchange for her eternal loyalty, she'd receive immortality.
Upon finding out, the clergy sentenced her to death by beheading. After having her last rites administered by her friend Noire, her head was cut off and the rest of her body burned. Unbeknownst to them, her pact with the Ancients had granted her immortality, and thus she was re-assembled, with only superficial scars left.The Church, then, decided to instead banish her to the Woodlands in the far ends of Rumina. To Ceres, this was far from a punishment: she'd be able to live freely from the land, without anyone bothering her. The townsfolk were not permitted to enter the woods after this decision, even though it was the nearest location for foraging and hunting.It's said even now, after a full moon, the bravest ones try to enter the Woods to get rid of "the Witch", but none of them have ever returned.
{ APPEARANCE & PERSONALITY. }
Ceres has light skin, adorned with beauty marks and red marks resembling tattoos across arms and legs. Her hair is an ashy blonde hue, long and messy, and her eyes are heterochromatic: left eye is green, right eye is amber. Her lips are usually upturned in a sardonic smile.She wears a multi-layered dress, made of fabric scraps, a veil and shawl made of transparent fabric, and many golden accessories (most notably, her sun and moon earring). She doesn't wear shoes.She's selfish and reckless: whatever she feels like doing, she will do, and there's little anyone can say to discourage her from acting on her impulses. Due to her immortality, she has no care for the safety of herself (or others). Her lifestyle is entirely driven by hedonistic pursuits, even if it's immoral or forbidden.
{ RELATIONSHIPS . }

They met during priestess training, eventually becoming close friends. Ceres lacks loyalty to anyone beyond the Ancients, but she places her trust on Noire without hesitation. Their bond is a tragic one.▸ LAURENT { ??? }
A knight hired by the Church to attempt kill Ceres after her banishing one more time. They were nearly driven mad by Ceres's mind games, eventually ending up in her hut, nursed "back to health" by her and being kept bound to her property.
Their arm was wounded during the ordeal and Ceres sawed it off (she uses it to sleep, holding onto it like a pillow). She also plucked one of their eyes out (which she keeps in her home as a memento) shortly before they escaped.▸ EOPHIS { ??? }

She currently resides in Praxidice, running her medical practice, "The Dawn Clinic", where she treats multiple patients.
{ APPEARANCE & PERSONALITY. }
She looks similar to Noire, having tan skin and blonde hair, except her hair is a darker shade. Her eyes are dark like Noire's, but her lids are heavy with tiredness and darker at the bottom portion of her lid.Her usual attire consists of her doctor's coat, gloves, an undershirt and a skirt or pants. She rarely accessorizes or wears makeup, opting instead for something more comfortable to work in.Her dedication to her family and to help others often make her lose sight of her own needs, resulting in sleepless nights, a debilitating cigarette addiction and ridiculous amounts of pure black coffee. However, when confronted with these facts, she will simply state it's part of the job.
{ RELATIONSHIPS . }
▸ NOIRE { younger sister . }
They care deeply for each other and she's extremely commited to helping Noire. Noire is perhaps the most important person in the world to her, aside from her niece, Camilla.▸ CAMILLA { niece. }
She dotes on her like a second mother. She sends her letters to check up on Noire and her every week.▸ CERES { enemy. }
Ceres's misconduct and subsequent excommunication caused a lot of stress on an already overwhelmed Noire, so Eophis dislikes her greatly. She doesn't like her careless nature nor her selfishness, and thinks she was a horrible influence to her sister and their peers.
